    Louis Vuitton (1821-1892) was a prominent French leather-baggage producer and designer in the second half of the 19th century, mainly in Paris. A century later, Vuitton's brand is perceived as the sign of status all around the world and gained an exceptional reputation in the fashion industry.
    Vuitton " monogram canvas" design is probably the first(in the present-day sense of that word) designer label on a product, for it was conceived in 1896 in order to avoid any fakes. However, it is rather paradoxical that Louis Vuitton products rank among the most forged ones in the history of the fashion world. More surprisingly, the mere 1% of all products bearing the "Louis Vuitton" trade-mark are not a forgery.
    Among the “top ten“ fakes is the well-known Monogram Canvas , which was practically realised during Vuitton's life – his son, Georges, created it.
    Vuitton was born in Anchay, Jura(located in France, presently belonging to the Lavans-sur-Valouse commune). At he age of 14,Vuitton moved from his birthtown in 1835. A couple of years later, he came to Paris – there he apprenticed to a for luggage- and trunk-maker under the guidance of Monsieur Marechal. Finally, in 1854, he established his own department store in Paris.
    The contemporary Louis Vuitton corporation has carefully cultivated a celebrity clientele consisting of renowned models and actresses, who agreed to wear Vuitton's accessories in its merchandising campaigns. Vuitton's most favourite propagator is probably Uma Thurman, whose "sophisticated yet unpredictable image" is considered to be the best expression of the Vuitton trade mark. Among the other celebrities publicly supporting the Vuitton brand in various advertisements are J.Lo, Christina Ricci, Scarlett Johansson, Chloe Sevigni, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Gisele Bundchen and Hayden Christensen, who performed as a model for Vuitton's pret-a-porter and luggage lines.
    Vuitton bags and wallets are worn by such names as Ashley Tisdale, Ashlee and Jessica Simpson, Paris and Nicky Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Angelina Jolie, Pamela Anderson, Anna Kournikova, Carmen Electra, Siti Nurhaliza, Denise Richards, and many others. The Vuitton collections became almost anicon among their admirers and clients, who take every chance to boast with the famous designs and trade mark. They often name the Vouitton's accessories simply as “Louis“ – the Louis' devotees (among which are also “ordinary“ people) promoted this brand to the leading position in the sphere of accessory design, next to the corporations like Prada, Hermes or Gucci.





    The Louis Vuitton Company
    The Beginnings (1854-1892)
    Louis Vuitton (then called “Malletier a Paris" .. "a Trunk-Maker in Paris") established his first shop in 1854 on Rue Nueve des Capucines(Paris). About one and a half century before the already mentioned year, Diderot and d'Alembert, famous French philosophers, refer to many so-called malletiers as well as to their craft.
    The word malletier, meaning a trunk maker, has been applied to the first-class artisans, like e.g. Maison E.Goyard( Paris) alias "Malletier de luxe" which was then much celebrated for his voyage trunks. Goyard is with its date of funding – 1853 – is the present-day oldest still-existing trunk producer.
    Well-known craftsman and malletier- " La Malle Bernard" (one of the oldest trunk producer ) claims that the first flat-topped trunk was originally constructed by Louis Vuitton, who pionered also in selling lightweight and airtight flat-topped trunks. This was a great innovation for till the then time every trunk a round top to allow water to trickle out, which prevented it from being assembled. Vuitton's very first product was the gray-colored Trianon canvas flat trunk, which brought him success and his one of his clients was Eugenie, France empress at that time. The Vuitton trunks are exceptional also in their 5-number combination lock.
    In 1860 Vuitton opened Works in Asnieres-sur-Seine in order to adapt to the augmented demand. A couple of years later, his company was awarded the bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition at the World's Fair ( Paris), at which he – in 1889 - won the golden medal.
    The first Vuitton shop in London was opened in 1885. Approximately at that time Vuitton, in collaboration with his son Georges creates The Damier Canvas pattern , with a logo "marque L. Vuitton deposee" , meaning "L. Vuitton trademark".In 1892 Vuitton passed away and at the same time the company starts to sell handbags. The period stretching from Vuitton's death to 1936 could be termed as the golden age of this company, which gradually grew into one of the world's biggest corporations.
    In 1896 Georges created the 'Monogram Canvas', the patterns of which drew inspiration from the Oriental(particularly Japanese) designs from the time of the Victorian age. With the intention to avoid Vuitton desings to be forged, Georges conceived the already mentioned patterns, which could bear the attribute of being the first “real“ designer logo. Surprisingly, this was the starting point of the Vuitton counterfeits...
    In 1900, George has been asked to manage the "Travel Items and Leather Goods" section of the then Paris World Fair. This was followed by the introduction of the so-called 'Steamer Bag', which was a tiny bag to be kept inside Vuitton luggage cases.
    George was even given the honour of chairing the commitee of the Saint Louis World's Fair of 1904, at the time of presenting another innovative trunk collection – which were special in having a separate spaces for accessories like clothing, perfumes, etc.
    Not long time after introducing “car trunks“, in Champs-Elysees was opened at the then time world's biggest travel-goods market - The Louis Vuitton Building.
    Gradually, the Vuitton empire enriched the world of fashion of the handbags made entirely o crocodile skin, the bags for transportation of the Champagne bottles, Speedy bag,and many other interesting (and sometimes controversial) innovations. The end of Vuitton's golden age is marked by Georges' death in 1936. Georges is said to be responsible for more than 700 highly original designs.







    Modern Age of Louis Vuitton (1937-1996)
    The management of the corporation is given to Gaston-Louis Vuitton. In 1959 Vuitton company renovates the logo of Monogram Canvas in order to make it more “flexible“since the company intends to use it for wallets, bags and purses.
    The establishment of Vuitton stores in Tokyo and Osaka(1978, Japan) led, in the consequence, to the half of Vuitton's overall profit by the beginning of the 1990s.
    The result of Vuitton's merging with America's Cup was named Louis Vuitton Cup(1983), which is a preparative race (an eliminatory regatta) for the world's most prominent yacht competition.

    After introducing the Taiga leather collection, the company has – in 1996 – commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Monogram Canvas(the original MC is worked out in gold and brown).     Millennium Age of Louis Vuitton (1997-till now)
    In 1997 Vuitton eployed Marc Jacobs, a well-acclaimed designer, as the brand's artistic manager, which was followed by Jacobs' creation of Vuitton's premiere Pret-a-Porter clothing collection.
    Later, Stephen Sprouse - with the assistance of M.Jacobs – conceived and realized Vuitton's limited series of bags(in white and green), on which there is a graffiti signature Louis Vuitton inscribed on the traditional monogram logo(on the Pochette Accessories, the Pochette Porte-Monnaie Credit Wallet, the Keepall and the Speedy collection of bags there is also their name). Vuitton designed also another, the so-called VIP collection of bags(in black and pinkish-orange), consisting of a few items for prominent customers.
    M. Jacobs with Takashi Murakami in 2003 presented their original Monogram Multicolore canvas collection of bags and accessories, which was, in fact the traditional Monogram Canvas worked out in 33 distinct colors. Murakami went so far as to release the Cherry Blossom limited edition (in which comic strip faces are surrounded by yellow and pink flowers and irregularly attached at the top of the MC) which was followed by the Monogram Cerises collection with “smiling cherries“run through the MC logo; this line was sold via the LVMH official website - eLUXURY.
    The ninth Vuitton store in the United Kingdom - Leed Victoria Quarter(opened during the autumn of 2006)is the first one beyond the confines of London to contain the separate VIP section, offering the majority of Vuitton's collections(excluding the pret-a-porter series).









    Forgery
    Louis Vuitton trade mark is among the most falsified brands in the world - only around 1% of all the products marked with Monogram Canvas are originals. Sarcastically enough, the logo of Monogram Canvas was designed in order to make any attempts of counterfeiting impossible. According to the statistics of 2004, the proportion of Vuitton imitations is 18% of all confiscated forged items in the European Union.
    In 2005, Louis Vuitton Malletier (which is an affiliate of LVHM running the manufacture of Vuitton products) succeed in filing a lawsuit against Google in France. As the result, Google was had to pay 250,000 USD for unjust infringement, competing, and misleading advertising campaign. Vuitton has receivede half the award, but Google has not settled the suit in total amount, partially declaring that French bench don't have any legal right over particular Google domains.
    In 2006, LVMH (Vuitton's parent corporation) stated it engaged "some 60 people at various levels of responsibility working full time on anti-counterfeiting, in collaboration with a wide network of outside investigators and a team of lawyers."
